Fitness Holiday Thailand has looked at the causes of stress and found that exercise is the best cure to beat it. According to a study by the university of Rochester exercise can in fact build up our tolerance to stressful events.
When you exercise your heart rate goes up and your breathing quickens, all the the things that happen when you get stressed. Exercise can familiarise your body with these sudden changes and therefore is less likely to panic when stress kicks in.
When the body is in a high state of anxiety it releases a chemical called ‘cortisol’. High levels of cortisol in the body can lead to blood sugar spikes, insulin resistance and weight gain.
One of the main indicators of insulin resistance is fat around your middle or ‘muffin top’. A muffin top is a sign that your extra weight is caused by stress. This happens when the liver turns excess sugar into fat and its first storage area in the body is your mid rift. Abdominal fat is linked to heart disease and diabetes.
Another sign that we are getting stressed is a problem sleeping, lack of sleep can also mess with our metabolism. A recent study that tracked 120,000 people over a period of 20 years found that people who got less than 6 hours sleep and more than 8 hours was linked to weight gain. Another study by the University of Chicago found that dieters who had adequate sleep lost 55 percent more body fat than those who only managed 5 hours.
